The new E10 petrol

18 Oct 2021

E10 petrol was introduced to the UK in september. While it may be new to the UK, it is not new to the rest of the world, with Australia, America and countries in Europe having already been using it for several years.

What is E10 Petrol?
E10 petrol is a grade of petrol which contains 10% renewable ethanol and 90% unleaded petrol. The current grade in the UK is E5 which contains 5% ethanol and 95% unleaded petrol. E10 petrol is a more eco-friendly type of petrol and is being used in an attempt to reduce the Co2 emissions in the UK.

Why are we using E10 petrol now?
Using E10 petrol is estimated to reduce UK CO2 emissions by 2 per cent per car, 750 tonnes per year and the equivalent of taking 350,000 cars off the road.

Will all cars be compatible with E10?
Not all cars will be able to run on E10. Diesel cars cannot use E10. The department for transport estimates that around 700,000 cars in the UK will not be able to use E10 Petrol. However, petrol vehicles built after 2011 are compatible.

What if my car isn’t compatible with E10?
E5 petrol will still be available in petrol stations for people with cars unable to run on E10, however it will be a new super unleaded which will be more expensive.

How do I know if my car is compatible?
If you are unsure if your car can use E10 or not, there are online compatibility checkers available.
